Sharing this passion is the reason why we decided to create this Conference and Hackathon.
FPGA technology is one of the foundations for the revolutionary projects like fast telecommunication or autonomous cars. Thanks to the fast data processing and an ability to work on many resources, FPGA is a key in banking and insurance sector (acceleration of calculations and risk analysis based on data) or stock operations.
And that’s not all!
The mission of the event is to spread the knowledge of FPGA topics, meeting interesting guests and common networking.
Hackathon mini-game: Mars Impact

Mars Impact is a type of arcade game that gives several minutes of intense gameplay. We control a spaceship traveling through hostile territory, we must destroy hostile ships that hinder our access to Mars.
Game controls:
- “AWSD” – ship directions
- Space bar – shoot from the ship
Powerups while playing:
- ammo – increasing weapon level (max level 5)
- heart – health renewal by 1 point
- human – acceleration of the ship’s movement for 3 seconds
- shield – protects you from losing one damage
The goal of the game is to score as many points as possible while passing 5 waves of enemies. The results are available on the scoreboard.

Hackathon main task
We have reached Mars, colonized it, developed the economy and have the resources to grow even more.
The Mars surface has been covered with a number of mega-cities, each of which, to a greater or lesser extent improves the quality of life for everyone on the planet. There has been a high degree of technological development in fields that are providing a basic life support. Despite that many aspects of daily life still requires improvements.
Once there was a time when everyone thought that the mission is doomed to be a complete failure, due to the very harsh conditions on the Red Planet. However, brave pioneers have proved everyone wrong and now the mission is a colossal success. This great achievement inspired the “Martian Base Management” to announce a call for “Engineers” for the new Project. The best recruits, in addition to be placed onto the “Hall of Fame” will have a real impact on improving everyone’s living conditions on the planet.
As a participant, you will be assigned to a team representing one particular city. Within a given team, based on the specifications you receive, you will have to create “Helpers” – simple but functional drones that will help in everyday Martian life.
The condition for receiving a contract is to complete the tasks presented in 24 hours – only then the Planetary Board will receive clear feedback that the time is right for this type of undertaking, and those selected in the competition are very likely to meet the next challenges that surely will arise as the Project evolves.
What do you need?
A team of 2-3 people ready for the challenge (individual registration will not be possible).

Paweł Dowgiałło
INTEL
Paweł Dowgiałło graduated from the Technical University of Gdansk, Poland with MsC in Microelectronics. Over the course of his professional career, Pawel has gathered experience working in multiple companies. At Aldec he worked as an FPGA RTL developer and verification engineer where he was primarily delivering FPGA emulation and prototyping features for modeling various types of ASIC memories. At Adva Optical Networking Pawel was responsible for the development and validation of FPGA IPs for Adva’s ethernet metro-class products. In the rt 9 years of his professional career, Pawel has been leading multiple FPGA emulation and prototyping projects for Intel products like PCH Manageability Engine, Ethernet switches or novel CPU architectures for graph arithmetic. Over his employment at Intel Pawel has become recognized emulation and prototyping expert.

Rakesh Jain is a Product Manager at Siemens EDA’s Calypto Systems Division focused on FPGA design solutions. He has 25 years of experience in ASIC and FPGA design at Apple, Altera (now Intel), Synopsys, Chameleon Systems and Siemens EDA. At Siemens, he has held a variety of technical marketing, channel marketing and product management positions, focusing on the development and deployment of FPGA design products, flows, and methodologies. Rakesh holds a MSc in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, specializing in VLSI design.

Michał Kuklewski works with Thales Alenia Space in Switzerland since August 2021. His main responsibilities include development and simulation for different HDL-HDL-related projects.
He has over 7 years of experience in developing FPGA solutions for space applications and equipment testing, primarily Microchip (Microsemi) and Xilinx FPGAs. Michał has a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Technology in Warsaw.

Adam Milik - Is a co-simulation specialist at Aldec and an academic teacher at the Silesian University of Technology of Gliwice with 24 years of experience. His main interests are: high-level direct hardware synthesis of control programs (PLCs) and computation algorithms, logic synthesis for programmable devices, co-simulation in heterogeneous environments, control program implementation and partitioning for multithreaded execution.

Piotr Orleański, DSc. Eng. is the deputy director for technology development at the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences. During over 40 years of work, he has gained enormous experience in the development and implementation of new instruments in space missions, mainly in the fields of: optoelectronics, on-board power supply and on-board computers, and space technologies.
Piotr Orleański has participated in several spectacular international satellite projects, including Integral, MarsExpress, Herschel, SolarOrbiter (employment at FHNW in Switzerland, 2009-2017), ExoMars, and BRITE. He is the creator of the FPGA Satellite Applications Laboratory at CBK PAN, created thanks to cooperation with the Foundation for Polish Science. He has been a lecturer of space technologies at the Warsaw University of Technology, CBK PAN and the Military University of Technology for many years. He is a member of the Council of the Polish Space Agency and the Space and Satellite Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also a reviewer of many projects in the UE Horizon 2020 / Space program.

Andrzej Stasiak, PhD

Andrzej Stasiak is an experienced hardware/software FPGA IP architect/engineer.
His professional carrier started in 1997 as a hardware IP developer in an international corporation. For broadening his technical horizons, Andrzej accepted an assistant professor position at Technical University leading researches & giving lectures covering hardware architecture and design domains. He defended his PhD thesis in 2007 in hardware-software codesign domain. Andrzej moved back to the industry continuing his professional journey joining the Intel Technology Poland. He participates in and leads various hardware/software projects, mainly: hardware architecture/design/development, HW/SW performance analysis, FPGA/ASIC technology, software low level architecture/design/development, widely understood research & development.
Many may find Andrzej (but not only) on mountain trails, sea lines or road bicycle racing competitions.
He believes the knowledge & experience sharing between universities and industry, is a key aspect to move forward and make our lives just better.

What is the FPGA Hackathon and Conference – Hack into Mars?
It’s a social coding contest where FPGA developers collaborate to solve given tasks and compete for prizes. Hackathon will be preceded by FPGA subject related Conference . This Event is also a great networking opportunity!
Who is this Event for?
The Conference is for everyone interested in FPGA subject.
The Hackathon is for students and professionals of any engineering and technology career, enthusiasts of microcontrollers, FPGAs, programming and electronics in general.
If you would like to have your first experience solving basic problems of FPGA or you are already experienced and you want to challenge your skills on FPGA, then this hackathon is for you!
How much does it cost?
FREE. Registration and participation in both Hackathon and Conference is free of charge.
When and where?
25th – 27th November , 2022 . Conference – online. Hackathon – Krakow Technology Park and online.
How many people should be in a Team?
The Team should consist of 2-3 people.
I don’t have a Team, what now?
We do encourage participants to start forming teams before the Event. However, if you don’t manage to find one, apply as an individual. In field ‘Team name’ please type – looking for the team. We are organizing a team forming activity before the hacking starts.
What should we do when one of our Team Members will not be able to participate in the Hackathon? Can the rest of our Team still participate?
Yes, you can still participate in smaller team, but you have to inform Organizers about every personal changes in your team.
How to register other Team Members?
Everyone must sign up separately. If you have a team every Member must provide the same ‘team name’ in the appropriate field in the registration form.
What is a task?
The detail regarding the task will be provided on Hackathon start day during the Event.
How will Teams be judged?
Judging criteria will be described in separate documents on Hackathon start day during the Event.
What is the language of the contest?
The Hackathon and Conference is in English.
What should I prepare?
Prepare your laptop, mobile phone, wearable computing devices and whatever technology inspires you. Check your Internet access. Make sure that you will feel comfortable during intense hacking.
Do I have to stay the whole time during Hackathon?
Competitors don’t have to stay overnight to be eligible to win, but we strongly encourage to stay the whole 24h. At least one team member must be present at the results presentation to show their Team’s work effects.
What will be provided during Hackathon?
1 FPGA board per Team, virtual machines with SW delivered by our Sponsors required to fill the tasks. There will also be Mentors who will help you in troubles.
At the in-person Event Organizers will provide many attractions:
